Inspector General of Police S.J.M. Geelani on Wednesday said that the death of Sub-Inspector Altaf Ahmad in a shootout in Bandipora in north Kashmir is a loss for the security forces, as he had done tremendous work on anti-terrorism front.

"In this firing, Sub-Inspector Altaf received bullet injuries in his body. He succumbed to his injuries in the hospital. Altaf was one of our best officers. He has done tremendous work on anti-terrorism front and it is a big loss for us," Geelani told the media here.

"We had information on movement of terrorists on road towards Bandipora. Our party was there and Sub-Inspector Altaf Ahmad was leading that party. They intercepted a vehicle after the suspicion that terrorists are using that vehicle. This was a small load carrier in which two terrorists were hiding. When the vehicle was stopped, they opened fire. We suspect that one of the terrorists is injured. The whole area is cordoned off, as we suspect that they are hiding in the nearby village," he added.
