Slovakian FM appointed next UNGA President

Slovakian Foreign Minister Miroslav Lajcak has been appointed as the next United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) President to lead the 72nd session in September.

Secretary-General Antonio Guterres' applauded Slovakia Foreign Minister's Election as President of General Assembly, while hailing outgoing leader's commitment, according to a UN statement.

"I warmly congratulate Foreign Minister Lajcak Miroslav on his election as General Assembly President. I had the fortune to get to know him as we each presented our vision for the United Nations to the Member States last year. Foreign Minister Lajcak has always demonstrated an impressive command of all aspects of United Nations action and a strong commitment to the principles that govern our work," said the Secretary-General.

The General Assembly session on Wednesday elected 16 vice presidents, in addition to five vice presidents appointed by the permanent members of the Security Council.

Lajcak will begin his tenure Sept. 12 at the helm of the 193-member UN body.
