Australian cricketer Steve Smith is reportedly hoping to be recalled to the Test squad for the Ashes after delivering a timely century for Australia A in their match against Ireland in Belfast.

Smith, who barely set a foot wrong in mounting his case for inclusion before the first Test at Trent Bridge starting on July 10, was 104 not out at stumps on day one, with Australia A 6-248 after Ireland won the toss and fielded, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

The report further said that including with his century, Smith smashed 14 boundaries and a six and shared in partnerships with teammates Moises Henriques and James Pattinson, which brings him in contention for the 'shadow player' post considered by national selector John Inverarity should captain Michael Clarke remain in doubt over his back condition.

Meanwhile Smith, who's innings were timely as he competes with George Bailey and Adam Voges for a call-up, praised Pakistan-born asylum seeker Fawad Ahmed, who has also been included in the Australia A side, strengthening the belief that he is on track for an Ashes call-up.

According to Smith, the leg-spinner is bowling well in the nets, adding that he is looking forward to watching Ahmed bowl in the main games.
