Contrasting centuries from Steve Smith and Adam Voges have propelled Australia to a solid 193-run second innings lead at stumps on the fourth day of the second Test against New Zealand in Perth on Monday.

Australia were 258 for two as Smith and Voges steadied the ship after New Zealand made early inroads into the hosts' batting line-up.

Smith (131 not out) and Voges (101 not out) weaved a solid 212-run partnership for the third wicket after the tourists had dismissed openers Joe Burns (0) and David Warner (24) cheaply.

Earlier in the day, Ross Taylor pulled New Zealand back into the game with his magnificent 290-run knock and helped the tourists post a first-innings lead of 65 at the WACA ground.

Taylor broke the century-old record after scoring the highest-ever score by a New Zealand batsman overseas as New Zealand were bowled out for 624.
