After suggesting marriage over condoms to prevent AIDS and suggesting the need for banning sex education, Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan is being roundly criticised for giving such statements.

Social activist Abha Singh said: "Dr. Harsh Vardhan is a Health Minister and not a saint. He has made a very careless statement. There is a problem of increasing abortions because of which young girls are losing their lives. Why is he preaching? He has to follow the rules. He has to ensure that condoms are supplied. He is supposed to do his duties. Sex indulgence has started at young age so it's necessary that you provide them sex education. It should not be made a taboo. Children are nowadays exposed to all the websites."

All India Progressive Women Association (AIPWA) Secretary Kavita Krishnan said: "This type of statement is very dangerous, because there is rampant sex in our society. This leaves our children in danger. Everywhere child sexual is taking place, so, it is necessary to teach them sex education. It doesn't mean that we will teach them how to do sex. Teenagers are getting bad sex education from media or everywhere else so, we need to give them proper education."

Earlier, Harsh Vardhan, who is currently on a visit to the United States, wrote on his blog, "So-called 'sex education' to be banned."

Yesterday he had mentioned in his blog that, "Condoms promise safe sex, but the safest sex is through faithfulness to one's partner. Prevention is always better than cure.
