Somalia's al Qaeda linked militant group al Shabaab has named Ahmad Umar as their new leader after former head Ahmed Abdi Godane was killed in a United States airstrike earlier this week.
The group made the announcement of the new leader in an online statement, reported the BBC.
Al Shabaab militants also said that they would take revenge for the death of their former leader Godane.
Somalia's authorities had put the country on alert after the confirmation of Godane's death fearing retaliatory attacks by al Shabaab militants.
One of the group's commanders Abu Mohammed said that the decision to appoint him as the leader had been unanimous.
