Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Friday congratulated British Prime Minister David Cameron and the Conservative party on their victory in the UK general elections.

She expressed the hope that the United Kingdom will attain new heights under his leadership, a Congress party statement said.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also congratulated Cameron on his victory.

Cameron is set to return to Downing Street after Labour Party leader Ed Miliband conceded defeat in the wake of the Tories securing solid majority at the May 7 polls, defying pre-election predictions.

After claiming victory in Whitney, Cameron struck an inclusive tone by saying that he intended to "govern on the basis of governing for everyone in our United Kingdom".

He also voiced his desire to press ahead with a referendum on Britain's membership of the European Union and to complete the Conservatives' economic plan.
