Sony has reportedly sold over 5.3 million PlayStation 4 systems around the world since its launch in November.
The Japanese company surpassed its own expectations of selling 5 million units in the financial year ending March 2014.
Sony's PS4 record sale comes ahead of its release in the company's home territory of Japan, the Verge reported.
The recent NPD figures had shown strong US sales for the PlayStation 4 in January.
