Commemorating World Malaria Day on Monday, the health department of the South African government took a vow to eliminate the disease in the country by 2018.
In a statement, the Department of Health said that it would launch awareness and educational campaigns through various mediums to achieve zero tolerance of locally transmitted malaria by 2018.
South Africa registered 11, 700 cases of the disease in 2014, down from 64, 000 in 2000 with most diagnoses coming from areas bordering Swaziland, Zimbabwe and Mozambique.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has said that South Africa has the potential to eliminate malaria by 2020.
