Prayers were held across the United States after nine people were killed in a gun attack at a historic African-American church in Charleston, South Carolina.

Several churches in Charleston were crowded with people. The BBC reported that hundreds of mourners gathered to pay tribute outside the Emanuel AME Church, where the attack took place.

In New York, services and protests took place, with messages such as 'Black Lives Matter' and 'Stop killing black people' displayed on placards.

Six women and three men, including the pastor, were killed in the attack after a white gunman opened fire during a Bible study meeting. The 21-year-old suspect, Dylann Roof, attended the meeting for a full hour before firing.

He was arrested during a traffic stop in Shelby, North Carolina. After appearing in court on Thursday, Roof waived his right to extradition and was flown back to South Carolina.
