Sporting fraternity pays tribute to Nice carnage victims

Sportsperson across the world showed solidarity and paid tribute to the victims of latest terror attack in the French city of Nice, where 84 people have been killed and injured scores more.

France has been stunned and sickened by a third massacre in 18 months in which a lorry driver rammed his vehicle into a crowd of night-time revellers celebrating Bastille Day, the French national day on the seafront in the southern part of the country.

According to eyewitnesses, the driver zigzagged his vehicle at high speed in order to kill maximum number of people before police shot him dead.

French footballers took to micro-blogging website Twitter to expressing solidarity and deep condolence to the bereaved family members, the Mirror reported.

Manchester United striker Anthony Martial posted a picture containing the colours of the French flag, the word 'Nice', and two hands pressed together to signify a prayer, while his France teammate Moussa Sissoko said: "What is this will it stop one day...? Support and brotherhood in the #ForceAuxFamilles #Nice06 Niçois."

"All my most sincere thoughts to the victims, their families and witnesses yesterday of the new Act terrible experiences in Nice," Arsenal striker Oliver Giroud wrote on Twitter.

Meanwhile, Spanish tennis maestro Rafael Nadal offered his condolences saying, "Watching the news and horrified by what happened in Nice. My support for the French people, all the victims and their families."

Elsewhere, a minute's silence was observed before the start of Stage 12 at the Tour de France and golfers at the Open Championship wore black ribbons on their caps as a mark of respect for the victims.

Describing the gruesome act as 'terrorist' attack, President Francois Hollande has declared three days of mourning in the shellshocked country.
