The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports on Friday issued a show cause notice to Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) as a result of numerous complaints and media reports of ill-treatment of athletes and poor conduct of the National Para-Athletic Championship, which was held in Ghaziabad last month.
The show cause notice has been sent to PCI president Rajesh Tomar and PCI secretary general J. Chandrashekhar.
According to an enquiry conducted by the Sports Authority of India, it was reported that athletes participating in the games complained that the building they were housed in did not having basic amenities like water, proper bedding and fans, and was replete with mosquitoes. Over 700 differently-abled athletes participated in the championship.
The notice further said that there was lack of planning in conceptualisation and conduct of a prestigious national event.
Earlier this week, the PCI was suspended by the International Paralympic Committee for an indefinite period.
