The Sri Lankan authorities have released two prominent human rights activists who were detained under anti-terrorism laws.

The arrests of Catholic priest Father Praveen Mahesan and Ruki Fernando had provoked domestic and international criticism.

The authorities said they had been held under suspicion of fostering communal disharmony, the BBC reports.

According to the BBC, both men had been working with families of disappeared people.

They were arrested in northern Sri Lanka and held for 48 hours, the authorities said.
