The Government of Sri Lanka has reportedly seized the passports of 74 Indian nationals working at a plywood factory near Colombo.

The Indian nationals have reportedly been charged with working in the island-nation without valid work visas.

The Department of Immigration and Emigration in Sri Lanka took action against the Indian workers for holding tourist visas and working illegally in the country.

The department said the passports will be returned to the Indian nationals after they produce return plane tickets for India.

The department also said that action will be taken against the company for violating visa norms.

The Indian company is registered with Sri Lanka's Board of Investment.
