Jammu and Kashmir Government imposed curfew like restrictions in various areas of Srinagar to prevent Shias from taking out Muharram processions across the city today.
One of the Muharram processions was scheduled to take place from Shaheedgunj to Dal Gate through Lal Chowk. Police also detained 30 mourners.
Despite the restrictions, people tried to take out processions at Shaheedgunj and Karan Nagar, but they were stopped by the police and the paramilitary CRPF who fired tear gas shells and resorted to a baton charge.
Muharram processions have been disallowed in parts of Srinagar since 1990, especially in some of the uptown areas. Smaller congregations in downtown Srinagar and on the city's outskirts are permitted.
