A new study has found that parents who lay down proper rules and regulations in the family house have slimmer kids.

In an attempt to help kids shed off the kilos, American and Canadian scientists set a home-based intervention by shortening TV time, increasing sleep time, and encouraging families to have dinner together, the New York Daily News reported.

Researchers from Melbourne's Murdoch Children's Research Institute said that when both parents set clear guidelines about household routines, children had a lower body mass index and were thinner.

The study is published in the journal JAMA Pediatrics.
