A pilot on board a Surya Kiran aircraft that crashed earlier today died while two other pilots are undergoing treatment at Command Hospital here, the Indian Air Force said on Tuesday.
A mid-air crash of two aircraft belonging to the Surya Kiran Aerobatic Team occurred today while they were rehearsing for Aero India 2019, slated to begin on Wednesday.
"Today morning at around 1150 hrs, two Hawk aircraft of Surya Kiran Aerobatic Team crashed while practicing for the forthcoming Aero India Air Show. Three pilots were occupants. Two pilots ejected and have been evacuated to the Command Hospital. Third pilot sustained fatal injuries," the IAF said.
The Air Force also said damage to life and property in the vicinity of the crash site is being ascertained, and a Court of Inquiry will investigate the cause of the accident.
Karnataka Director General of Police MN Reddi, who visited the crash site, said no civilians were injured following the mishap.
"Visited the #SuryakiranAirCrash site. One IAF Pilot has unfortunately lost his life. Two others injured shifted to hospital, but said to be out of danger. No injuries to any civilians. No major damage to any houses in ISRO colony. Fire Force has completely suppressed the fire" he tweeted.
