A Stockholm based hospital is opening Sweden's very first emergency clinic for male rape victims.

The South General hospital, which already offers a 24-hour walk-in centre which provides urgent care for women victims, announced that it would be admitting men and boys from October as well, reported the BBC.

According to Swedish media report, around 370 cases of sexual assault on men or boys were reported in the country last year.

Dr Lotti Helstrom said that it was general perception that men cannot be raped, with the subject being an "extremely taboo."

However, it was important for men to have equal access to emergency care, she had added.

Inger Bjorklund, a spokesperson for the Swedish Association for Sexuality Education (RFSU) welcomed the announcement saying that this would "contribute to the awareness of experiences of sexual abuse among men.
