A series of airstrikes carried out by the Syrian government in the northern city of Raqqa, a stronghold for the Islamic State (IS), has killed about 95 people and injured 120, a monitoring group said.

The London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that the death toll was expected to rise as many people were critically injured, reported the CNN.

It said that the government forces carried at least 10 airstrikes in the city targeting the al-Hani Mosque and the public souk.

Syria's state TV and news agency have not reported on the military operation, the report said.

Raqqa is regarded by the IS as the de facto capital of the self-declared "Islamic State" that stretches across large areas of Iraq and Syria.

The city houses IS' training centers, weapon depots and provides accommodations for jihadis.
