Teachers from across the nation joined hands to take part in a protest rally here on Sunday to condemn the police baton charge on students who were demonstrating against the alleged molestation of a girl on the Jadavpur University campus.
They walked down rain-drenched roads holding banners and placards that condemned the police atrocity on students within university campus.
Professor Parthapratim Biswas of the Department of Construction Engineering of Jadavpur University said, "The teachers now are in the protest of all these issues, specially the atrocities of the police within the campus itself and also the teachers want impartial inquiry in order to find out the molestation which took place on the girl student on the university campus. That's why teachers from all the places of India they have now joined this rally to protest this particular issue and in the interest of the society."
Four students unions in West Bengal had called for a strike on Thursday and demanded the resignation of the vice chancellor of Jadavpur University over alleged molestation of students in hostel.
Students alleged that police authorities dragged out students and manhandled them. Reportedly, more than 30 students were arrested by the police while some of them were also injured.
The incident happened when students were demonstrating against molestation of the second year student of prestigious Jadavpur University in Kolkata. Reportedly, the student was molested by few male students who dragged her inside the boys hostel of the varsity on August 28.

Professor Biswas also said, "We want to restore the normalcy within the campus for which necessary initiatives have to be taken by the government and also by the governor and the second issue is that with the bilateral negotiations and discussions only this kind of stalemate can be resolved and which we need that immediate this kind of dialogue must be initiated."
West Bengal recorded the highest number of gender crimes in the country at 30,942 in 2012 - 12.7 percent of India's total recorded crimes against women. These crimes include rape, kidnapping and sexual harassment and molestation.
The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) said there were 309,546 crimes against women reported to the police last year against 244,270 in 2012, with the highest number recorded in southern state of Andhra Pradesh.
Crimes included rape, kidnapping, sexual harassment, trafficking, molestation and cruelty by husbands and relatives. They also include crimes in which a woman was driven to suicide as a result of demands for a dowry from her husband or in-laws.
