Telangana CM directs officials to initiate plans for welfare of weavers

Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao has instructed the concerned officials to initiate all measures for the welfare of the weavers and also to formulate an exclusive and comprehensive plan for their development.

The decision was made by the Chief Minister after a review meeting was held on Handloom and Powerloom workers at Pragathi Bhavan.

The meeting was attended by Chief Advisor to the Government Rajiv Sharma and Principal Secretaries S. Narsing Rao and Shanti Kumari amongst others.

"Handloom workers are in a deep crisis and leading miserable lives. Their hereditary profession is not been able to remove their hunger. Unable to sustain on their profession, they are becoming daily wageworkers. Some of them unfortunately end their lives," said the Chief Minister.

Rao further said that the government must create a market for the products of the weavers and must support the traditional art form.

"The government should come to their rescue with a programme of action. The handloom weavers should be given bulk orders and adequate work also should be given to the powerloom sector," he said.

"Brands like Narayanpet, Gadwal and Pochampally are known for their beautiful hand woven silk sarees and have an international market and they should be given support and help," he added.

Help will also be extended to the power loom sector. However, it will be mainly focused on welfare of the workers.
