Thailand protest leader Suthep Thaugsuban has said he has given two days time to Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra for returning "power to the people".

However, Suthep did not reveal anything as to what action would he follow, if the ultimatum were not heeded, the BBC reports.

He said that his meeting with the prime minister had been held under the auspices of the military and there was no compromise from either side.

According to the report, five people have died and dozens have been injured in major protests into its eighth day in the Bangkok's old city to bring down the government of Yingluck over corrupt practices.

On Friday, at least 1,000 protesters forced their way into the army headquarters compound, urging the army to come out in support of the demonstrators.

The protestors accused the government of being controlled by the prime minister's brother, Thaksin Shinawatra, who was overthrown by the army in September 2006.

Yingluck has been prime minister since 2011, when her Pheu Thai party won a general election.

Thaksin was earlier blamed for elevating corruption to new heights, and the protestors said that he was trying to control everything from self-imposed exile through his sister Yingluck.
