Thailand's Election Commission (EC) member Sodsri Sattayatham has said that a general election will be held within 60 days and suggested February 2 for polls to be held.
The commissioner said that members of the Democrat Party, who had resigned from the House, could register again and contest the polls, the Bangkok Post reports.
The statement came immediately after Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra announced a House dissolution on the national television this morning.
The EC will cancel the plan for by-elections due on December 22 to fill eight seats, that were previously left vacant by the resignation of Democrat MPs to lead a protest against the Yingluck administration, she added.
