Nepali President Bidya Devi Bhandari, on the occasion of World labour Day, wished for peace, happiness and prosperity, guarantee of labour rights and favourable working environment for the people living at home and abroad.

She also desired justifiable remuneration and social security for the workers for establishment of the appropriate industrial relations, as reported in the Kathmandu Post.

Talking about the pre-eminent contributions and sacrifices of the working class for the establishment of the Federal Democratic Republic in Nepal, she said, the labourers would benefit from the constitutional provision of making the socialism-oriented economy.

President Bhandari has also expressed confidence that the International Labour Day would unite all working class people across the world in a thread of unity, to ensure their rights and independence.

May 1 has been celebrated as the World Labour Day since 1890. The decision was taken by the labour organisations and labour leaders of the world in 1889 in Paris.

In Nepal, various trade union organisations are making preparations for celebrating the day. Nepal has marked the celebration of the Day with the Workers' Movement (Majdoor Andolan) held at Biratnagar, some 68 years ago.

Following the political change in 1990, Nepal government began granting public holiday on the day.
