Three aircrafts of the World War II era have been found in Manipur's Loktak Lake after they went missing during the conflict.
Two of the plans were Japanese fighters which had reportedly been shot down by British forces in 1944, while the third was a British bomber that had crashed in the same area.
"We have found three sites where wreckages of these aircrafts are buried. After they crashed, locals had sold parts of the aircraft as aluminium scrap. But the engines which were as heavy as 600 kilograms could not be lifted out of the lake and are still lying underwater. We got our information from the few survivors of that period," Yumnam Rajeshwor Singh, co-founder of the Second WW Imphal Campaign Foundation told the media.
Singh added that a team of volunteers are scanning the bed of the Loktak Lake near the Imphal West district to locate the wreckages with the help of GPS locators and underwater equipment.
The Battle of Imphal, part of the World War II, took place in 1944 which resulted in a decisive victory for the British forces over the Japanese.
