Condemning the rise in incidents of rape cases in the national capital specially against children, Congress leader Sharmistha Mukherjee on Sunday said the state government and the police should put an action plan immediately and try to make Delhi a safer place for women.
"These kind of incidents are shocking but when it happens to little children, there are no words to describe the utter horror. There has been sharp increase in the number of rape cases in Delhi specially against children. The police and the state government is not doing anything about it, instead of just rhetoric they should just put an action plan immediately and try to make Delhi a safer place for women," Mukherjee told ANI here.
Mukherjee also targetted the Delhi Government for not paying salaries to the employs of 'gender resource centre', a gender awareness programme.
"Rape is not just a law and order problem. Congress Government had started 'gender resource centre' which is a gender awareness programme. It will help in creating awareness on criminal activities. This programme and the helpline number 'awaaz uthao' which was started by the Congress government has completely stopped because the employs are not being paid salaries. MLAs are raising their salary by 400 percent but people who are working for women safety under Delhi government are not paid salaries. Delhi government should wake up to the fact that Delhi Government is becoming increasingly unsafe for women," she added.
Mukherjee's response came after a seven-year-old girl was allegedly gangraped at a park in South Delhi's Tigri area on Saturday evening. Victim's uncle Om Prakash claimed the girl was playing in a nearby park when some boys lured her and took to another park close by and gangraped her.
