Time magazine has announced that Nancy Gibbs will be its first female managing editor.
Fifty-three-year-old Gibbs has been at the 90-year-old magazine since 1985 and authored major cover stories on politics, terrorism and culture, the New York Post reports.
She replaces Rick Stengel, who is expected to join the U.S. State Department as Secretary for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs.
Gibbs' appointment was widely expected for the past two years, when Stengel named her his Deputy Managing Editor.
She said she wanted to make Time an even bigger global brand.
Gibbs faces challenges like erosion of the value of news weeklies with the emergence and growing strength of the digital world.
