The students wing of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Monday led a counter-rally in response to last Saturday's mammoth rally against the police action in Jadavpur University.

The TMC's counter-rally which began from the Academy of Fine Arts and ended at Raj Bhawan saw student activists carrying placards and posters that read university is for education and urged people to say no to anarchy.

Trinamool Congress MP and nephew of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Abhishek Banerjee, had earlier controversially asked whether the ban on liquor and illegal substances had triggered of the protests.

This comes in the wake of repeated protests reportedly demanding the resignation of the vice chancellor, the pro- vice chancellor and the registrar of the varsity in the wake of alleged police assault on the students during the protests on September 17.

The students had earlier protested over the alleged molestation of a female student last month.
