Newly elected Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott has pledged to be a respectful, thoughtful national leader for his country.

In his first interview after winning the election, Abbott said he was ready to take on the responsibility that he had been preparing for his whole life.

According to the Telegraph, vowing to get his agenda moving to stop the boats and abolish the carbon tax, Abbott said he wanted to govern for all Australians, including those who would never vote for him.

The 55-year-old said he was ready to take on the biggest responsibility of his political life.

Abbott said his government's absolute priority would be to deliver on their commitments, starting from Day 1.
