Russia's former Deputy Prime Minister and leading opposition leader Boris Nemtsov has been shot dead in Moscow by an unidentified attacker in a car, said Russian officials.

According to BBC, the attacker shot Nemtsov four times in the back as he passed from a bridge in view of the Kremlin, said the police.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has condemned the murder, said the Kremlin.

Nemtsov said in a recent interview that he feared that Putin would have him killed for his opposition to war in Ukraine.

U.S. President Barack Obama also condemned the murder urging the Russian government to conduct a "prompt, impartial and transparent investigation".
