Toshiba wins multi-billion yen contract to provide electronic equipments to Brazil

Japan-based electronics conglomerate Toshiba has won a six billion yen contract to provide electrical equipments to Rio de Janeiro train transportation authorities.

A consortium of China National Machinery Import and Export Corporation, a Chinese trading company and Changchun Railway Vehicles Corporation, a Chinese rolling stock manufacturer, awarded the contract to Toshiba on behalf of Secretaria de Estado de Transportes (SETRANS), the Rio transportation authority which manages train operations in the suburban town of Rio de Janeiro.

The order comprises of providing propulsion system, auxiliary power system and train monitoring system for 60 trains which is to be delivered during September 2013 to December 2014.

Toshiba already provides various electrical technologies to SETRANS which includes drive system that integrates Toshiba's power saving inverters and traction motors, auxiliary power system for in-car lighting and air condition, etc.

In a run up to the FIFA World Cup in 2014 and Olympics in 2016, the Brazilian government has paced up the development projects ranging from electricity generation and transmission to upgradation of road and rail infrastructure in big cities such as Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro which will host the events.

The government will invest over USD 26 billion during the course of four year (2011-2014) to upgrade its infrastructure to prepare for the two international events.
