The Supreme Court, on Tuesday, in a landmark judgement, recognised transgenders as the third gender in this country. This decision of the apex court makes India the first country to give transgenders third gender status.
Sanjeev Bhatnagar, appearing on behalf of LGBT activist Lakshmi Narayan Tripathi said "Supreme Court has taken a very serious view about the transgender community. They have been deprived since many years and the court has given them the recognition of being a third gender in the country. They will be getting the title of backward class and they will be entitled to all the reservation facilities in employment, education, in public places like bus stops or railway stations at par with other citizens. India is the first country to deal with the third category of sex,"
"The court has given direction to all the state and central government to give them reservation and their rights by identifying them," Bhatnagar added.
