Hundreds of people paid their last respects to veteran literary figure, Udupi Rajagopalacharya Ananthamurthy, here today.
Ananthamurthy died at the age of 82 yesterday after succumbing to multiple health complications in a city hospital.
Karnataka Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah along with other literary colleagues and fans paid homage to him as his body was kept in an open casket.
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader, Ananth Kumar said, "Ananthamurthy is no more. I express my sadness at the loss of this great soul."
Ananthamurthy's works have been translated into many Indian and European languages. He also served as the Vice-Chancellor of the Mahatma Gandhi University in Kerala during the late 1980s.
Director of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, H.N. Suresh said Ananthamurthy would continue to inspire people even after his demise.
"As a teacher he has done such wonderful work in universities. As a Vice-Chancellor he is remembered a lot all over the country. And as a writer he was a remarkable one. All through his life he has been a great source of inspiration for youngsters," said Suresh.
