A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was recently signed between the North East Electric Power Corporation (NEEPC) and the Tripura State Electrical Corporation Limited to increase the production capacity of three power plants in the state.
This will help in tackling the power crisis not only in Tripura, but also the whole of the northeast region.
The NEEPC and the Tripura Government will jointly invest Rs. 500 crores to boost the production capacity of 2 gas-based thermal power plants at Rokhia and Baramura and one hydel power project at Dambur.
The generation capacity of the three power plants will be augmented by 62 MW in the next 2 years.
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar and other top officials were also present during the signing of the MoU in Agartala.
" The main advantage is that with the consumption of the gas which is used right now, with the same quantity of gas we will be generating about 60 MW more in the projects," said PC Pankaj, Chairman-cum-Managing Director, NEEPCO.

" In the next 1-2 years, we will start work on this project to generate more power in these 2-3 places. In the future demand for power will only go up and more electricity will be needed to be produced. The Tripura power limited and NEEPCO will work together towards this aim in the future," said Manik Sarkar.
NEEPCO is also commissioning a 101 MW gas based thermal power plant at Monarchak in western Tripura and a wind based power plant in the northeast.
Earlier last year, ONGC's gas based thermal power plant at Palatana had started generating electricity.
The development of such infrastructure projects in the state will meet the power demands of the region, besides generating employment in the northeast region.
