The Youth Congress unit of Tripura brought staged a protest here to demand the arrest of CPI-M activists who allegedly attacked a sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) here last Wednesday during a 24-hour nation-wide strike to protest against changes in labour laws and the privatisation of public sector undertakings (PSUs).
According to local media, a group of picketers attacked the Sabroom SDM Court on September 2 and tried to assault the magistrate to enforce the nation-wide bandh called by ten central trade unions in support of their 12-point charter of demands.
Several police personnel, including officer-in-charge of the Sabroom police station Sanjit Sen, were also injured when the police tried to prevent the CPI-M supporters.
"In the name of strike the CPIM leaders tried to spread a terror throughout the state and in spite of the SDPO and OC had lodging FIR against few leaders they have not yet been arrested under political pressure. We are raising question that the SDM had gone to office for some legal matter and due to the agitating cadres he had to hide in the bathroom for safety. The state Chief Minister Manik Sarkar also opposed the strike and went to office, why was his vehicle not stopped? Why the picketers did not stopped him?" said Susanta Chowdhury, state Youth Congress president.
He added: "It is very clear that in this state the police have been politicised and side by side a conspiracy is going on to capture the legal system on the people have faith and to stop the right to speak truth. We are protesting against this."
Meantime, it is reported that the Tripura High Court Chief Justice Deepak Gupta had expressed anguish over the attack in the court and in a letter to Chief Minister Manik Sarkar requested appropriate action against the attackers and directed the Chief Secretary to take legal action against the law breakers.
