United States President Donald Trump has announced that new 'major sanctions' will be imposed on North Korea in the wake of its latest missile test.

Trump revealed the move after a telephonic conversation with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping.

"Just spoke to President XI JINPING of China concerning the provocative actions of North Korea," Trump said in a tweet. "Additional major sanctions will be imposed on North Korea today. This situation will be handled!"

The White House said Trump "emphasized the need for China to use all available levers to convince North Korea to end its provocations and return to the path of denuclearization" during his call with Xi, the Hill reported citing the White House as saying.

The announcement comes after North Korea launched an intercontinental ballistic missile.

North Korea said it successfully tested a powerful new ICBM on Wednesday that put the entire U.S. mainland within range of its nuclear weapons.

The launch alarmed U.S. officials and experts, who said the advanced missile might be capable of reaching America's East Coast.

As per the Pentagon, the ICBM travelled about 1,000 km before splashing into the Sea of Japan.

However, the United States' Defence Department also stated that the missile did not pose a threat to the country, its territories or allies.

Responding to the missile test, US President Donald Trump said the country would "take care of it."

This is North Korea's first missile attack since September 15 when it fired an intermediate-range missile.
