United States President Donald Trump on Friday hailed the major breakthrough of the historic inter-Korean summit, where North and South Korea agreed to sign a formal peace treaty, ending the 65-year-old war between them.

In a series of tweets, Trump wrote, "KOREAN WAR TO END! The United States, and all of its GREAT people, should be very proud of what is now taking place in Korea!"

"After a furious year of missile launches and Nuclear testing, a historic meeting between North and South Korea is now taking place. Good things are happening, but only time will tell!" Trump wrote in his second tweet.

The comments made by Trump come ahead of a planned summit between him and North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un, which is slated to be held either in May or June.

Earlier in the day, the two Koreas agreed to sign a peace treaty formally later this year, ending the 65-year old war between the two countries.

In a joint declaration of the third inter-Korean summit at the Peace House here, the document formally called the 'Panmunjom Declaration for Peace, Prosperity and Unification on the Korean Peninsula,' read, "The two leaders solemnly declare that there will be no more war on the Korean Peninsula and a new era of peace has begun," CNN reported.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, in a statement, said that the two Koreas are one united people who should work together towards reunification.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in also reiterated that a new era of peace has begun and there will not be any more war on the Korean Peninsula.
