United States President Donald Trump will nominate Justin Muzinich as deputy treasury secretary, the White House said on Monday.

Muzinich, who was appointed Counselor to the Secretary of the Treasury Steven Mnuchin in February last year, advises the Secretary on domestic and international policy initiatives, including tax reform, according to the U.S. Department Of the Treasury.

The position has been vacant since Mnuchin took over last year. Trump's previous picks, James Donovan, and Brian Brooks, a Fannie Mae executive who was not formally nominated, withdrew their names from contention last year. Later, Mnuchin stated that he was not going to fill the position, reported the New York Times.

"I am delighted by the president's decision to nominate Justin to serve as deputy secretary of the Treasury. Justin has established himself as a leader in the department, and played a key role in the passage of the Tax Cuts & Jobs Act," Mnuchin said in a statement.

Muzinich holds an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School and has also taught at Columbia Business School in the past.
