The United Kingdom government on Thursday announced that the United States President Donald Trump will visit the UK later this year.

According to local media reports, the announcement came after Trump met with UK Prime Minister Theresa May at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos earlier.

The UK Prime Minister has asked her officials to finalise the details of Trump's visit to the UK as soon as possible.

"We're on the same wavelength in, I think, in every respect. We understand each other and the UK and the US are joined at the hip on mutual military defence. We share a really great relationship," Trump said.

May acknowledged the dynamic relationship between the two countries and said that she was looking forward for Trump's visit to the UK.

"We, too, have that really special relationship between the UK and the United States. It's at each other's shoulders. We face the same challenges across the world, and as you say we're willing to go and to defeat those challenges and meet them," May said.

Trump arrived in Davos on Wednesday evening, thus becoming the first US President to attend the forum in two decades.

Trump kicked off his first official day here by holding a bilateral meeting with May. He also met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, which was the first meeting after the US President recognised Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

Earlier, in the month, Trump cancelled his visit to London to officially open the new US embassy, blaming his predecessor Barack Obama for crafting a "bad deal".

Theresa May had invited Trump for a state visit when she became the first world leader to visit the president in the White House a year ago.

Trump and May clashed in November when the latter condemned his decision to re-tweet anti-Muslim propaganda from a far-right group, Britain First.

She said, in a rare public rebuke, "I am very clear that re-tweeting from Britain First was the wrong thing to do".
