Tsonga beats Federer in straight sets to win Rogers Cup for first time

17 Grand Slam titles holder Roger Federer lost to French tennis ace Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in straight sets in the Rogers Cup final.

Tsonga, who won the Rogers Cup final for the first time, won 7-5, 7-6 (7-3) in Toronto after recording impressive wins over Andy Murray and Grigor Dimitrov on his way to the final.

The first set went with serve until former world number one Federer went long on Tsonga's first break point. Federer saved a championship point before Tsonga claimed his second ATP Masters 1000 title, The BBC reported.

Federer said that Tsonga deserved this title, adding that he beat some amazing players on the way.

Tsonga said that if one believes in something it can happen, and added that he is proud of what he has achieved this week.

Meanwhile, British number three James Ward booked his place in the main draw of this week's Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati when he beat France's Paul-Henri Mathieu 7-6 (10-8), 7-5 in qualifying, the report added.
