Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu has resigned after his AK Party lost majority in parliamentary elections for the first time in the past 13 years.

According to BBC, after accepting his gesture, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has asked Davutoglu to stay on until a new government is formed.

Erdogan is now expected to give Davutoglu the job of forming a new coalition government.

The result came as a blow to Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's plans to boost his office's powers.

President Erdogan, who first came to power as prime minister in 2003, had been seeking a two-thirds majority to turn Turkey into a presidential republic.
