Turkmenistan President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov today arrived in Islamabad on a two-day visit to Pakistan at the invitation of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

The Turkmen President was received by Sharif at Nur Khan airbase. Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs, Syed Tariq Fatemi, and other senior officials were also present.

Berdimuhamedov will hold bilateral discussions of mutual interest with Sharif and President Mamnoon Hussain.

Berdimuhamedov's visit to Pakistan is significant as both countries are set to review progress on Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) gas pipeline project whose groundbreaking ceremony was held last year during Sharif's visit to Turkmenistan.

The ceremony was attended by Sharif, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and Indian Vice President Mohammed Hamid Ansari.

Both countries will hold talks on the implementation of the MoU signed in December during Sharif's visit to Turkmenistan for import of electricity.

A business forum for the businessmen of the two countries will also be organised on the sidelines of the visit, to strengthen the economic ties between the two nations.
