A U.S. court has reportedly sentenced two Pakistan-born brothers to prison for plotting to carry out a bomb attack in New York City in 2012 the US Justice Department has said.
While Raees Qazi was sentenced to 35 years, Sheheryar Qazi was given a 20-year-long jail term. The two brothers, who were living in Florida at the time of their arrest in 2012, pleaded guilty to federal terrorism charges in March, reports The Express Tribune.
Twenty two-year-old Raees said that he had travelled to New York in November 2012 to find a job so that he could make money to build a bomb. He had also claimed that he bicycled around New York City looking for targets but never chose one. He returned home after running out of money.
His elder brother, Sheheryar, a 32-year-old former taxi driver, supported the plot by paying bills, and providing a computer and cell phone, prosecutors said.
A statement released by the U.S. Justice Department also said that the two had assaulted two deputy U.S. marshals while in custody.
