The United States has shown deep concern over continued legal actions in Maldives that could further delay the presidential elections.

State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said the U.S. urges the Maldives government to hold fair, inclusive and transparent polls, the Daily Times reports.

She further added that the delay in polls could prevent former president Mohamed Nasheed from participating.

The Maldives government called on all parties on Tuesday to support fresh elections after the Supreme Court annulled last month's polls, even though international observers regarded them as free and fair.

The independent elections commission said the fresh ballot would be held on October 19, the report added.

The previous round was won by former leader Mohamed Nasheed, who claims he was ousted in a coup last year.
