The United States is planning to bomb pipelines in Syria in order to cut off the huge profits being made by Islamic State (IS) militant group from occupied oilfields, said a senior Obama administration official.

The U.S.' principal concern is that the extremist group is believed to be making two million dollars a day from the sale of fuel, said Julieta Valls Noyes, the deputy assistant secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs during a visit to London.

According to the Independent, Noyes said that the airstrikes were a feasible alternative.

The group has reportedly gained more than 430 million dollars from the central bank in Mosul after overrunning the Iraqi city in June.

Western officials described IS militant group as the wealthiest terrorist group in history.
