According to the Times Higher Education (THE) World Rankings for 2014-15, many UK universities are losing their place to leading Asian institutions in the top 200.
Asia now has 4 more universities in the world top 200, bringing the total to 24, with Tokyo University and the National University of Singapore making to the top 25 and six others making the top 50, BBC world reported.
Phil Baty, the editor of THE World University Rankings, said that overall, the UK's representation among the world's leading universities is declining as the universities of Reading, Dundee and Newcastle three fell out of the top 200 and two others occupy 198th and 199th place.
