The United Nations has said torture is widespread in Libyan jails and recorded 27 deaths since late 2011.

The office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and the UN support mission in Libya said in a report that torture is most frequent immediately after arrest and during the first days of interrogation to extract confessions or other information.

It said that some 8,000 prisoners jailed since the eight-month civil war in 2011 that toppled Muammar Gaddafi's regime are held without due process, news24 reports.

The report added that the detainees are usually held without access to lawyers and occasional access to families.
