UN General Secretary Ban-Ki-moon congratulated the government and the people of Pakistan for their successful holding of polls on May 11.
In a statement issued by the General Secretary, he called the polls as the first ever transition from one civilian government to another as a major democratic step.
The Secretary General praised the huge turnout of voters for the elections including youth and first-timers. The participation of women during elections was highly appraised by Ban but their deterring from voting in some parts of the country was condemned.
In a report by Tribune, Ban-Ki-Moon not only praised the polls as a great leap in the democracy of the country but also applauded the efforts put in by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and the government to ensure safe and fair elections.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the UN to continue to support and assist the ECP, the reports added.
