Senior lawyer Prashant Bhushan on Monday called for a Uniform Civil Code, which should be applicable to the entire country and acceptable to all communities.

Pointing out that the Directive Principles also state the same, Bhushan said, "However, the Uniform Civil Code doesn't mean that there should be a Hindu Code, which is made uniform."

"The most liberal elements of all the personal laws - whether it is Hindu Law, Muslim Law, Christian Law, etc. - the most liberal elements of all the personal laws should be taken together to provide a Uniform Civil Code, and which should be applicable to the entire country and will be acceptable to all communities," he added.

The Supreme Court has asked the Centre to take a quick decision on a Uniform Civil Code to end confusion over personal laws. A Bench headed by Justice Vikramjit Sen told Solicitor General Ranjit Kumar that if you want to have a Uniform Civil Code, have it, but you must take a decision soon.

The apex court gave the government three weeks to come up with a proposal to amend the Christian Divorce Act. The Court was hearing a PIL filed by a Delhi based man, seeking waiver of two year mandatory separation period before a Christian couple can move court for divorce by mutual consent.
