Union Minister for Law and Justice Ravi Shankar Prasad on Wednesday announced that the Union Cabinet has formalised its decision to abolish the Group of Ministers (GoM) mechanism.
Briefing media after a Cabinet meeting here, Prasad said. "The Cabinet confirmed the decision taken by the prime minister that all these large number of group of ministers numbering eighty cease to exist."
Last month, the Modi Government, after assuming office, had announced a major move to empower ministries and their departments, Prime Minister Narendra Modi decided to abolish all existing nine Empowered
Group of Ministers (EGoMs) and twenty-one Groups of Ministers (GoMs).
The government is of the view that the abolishing of GoMs and EGoMs would expedite the process of decision-making and usher in greater accountability in the system.
The ministries and departments will now process issues pending before the EGoMs and GoMs and take appropriate decisions at the level of ministries and departments itself.
Wherever the ministries face any difficulties, the Cabinet Secretariat and the Prime Minister's Office will facilitate the decision making process..
